Ivan Ivanov, an Olympic athlete who competed for Bulgaria in Greco-Roman wrestling, invented the Bulgarian Bag while working as a wrestling coach for the U.S Olympic wrestling team. Reminded of the feats of strength shown by shepherds who visited street fairs back in his home country, he was able to design a piece of equipment that mimicked the way the shepherds carried sheep and goats around their shoulders. He thought he could build upon the old traditions of these strong men with a modern take on the way they would carry these animals.
This fitness tool would help his wrestlers improve their bending, lunging, pulling, pushing, rotating, squatting, swinging and throwing. All of which were explosive, dynamic movements that he wanted to enhance with a simple piece of equipment.

The Bulgarian Bag became very popular when a former Navy SEAL who was working as an elite fitness trainer adopted its use.
